Dance Umbrella's 40th Birthday Fundraiser

"Dance Umbrella is 40 this year and on great form: still curious, still adventurous, still bringing over artists new to the UK” The Guardian 2018

For the past forty years, Dance Umbrella festival has presented more than 739 artists from 34 countries to over a million people. We have commissioned 80 new works at 72 venues ranging from Battersea Power Station to the British Library, from Alexandra Palace Ice Rink to an NCP car park rooftop.

We are a small charity and 50% of our work each year is powered by donations. To celebrate our 40th year we are commissioning four exciting new artists from around the world and need your help to bring this next generation of dance talent to London. Give it forwards and make a birthday gift to Dance Umbrella for great new dance.

Gifts of all sizes are gratefully received (really).

Dance Umbrella

To celebrate our 40th year in 2018 we have launched Four by Four — a programme inspired by the four decades of artistic growth, a way of moving forwards by looking back. In Four by Four all three of DU’s Artistic Directors — Val Bourne CBE, Betsy Gregory and Emma Gladstone — have invited an established artist from their time at the helm to nominate a ‘choreographer of the future’.

We’re delighted that Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Akram Khan, Stephen Petronio and Rocío Molina have agreed to take part and that have nominated the following artists:

Georgia Vardarou – nominated by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker
Abby Zbikowski – nominated by Stephen Petronio
Mythili Prakash – nominated by Akram Khan
Jon Maya Sein – nominated by Rocío Molina

Each of the nominated choreographers will receive funding from Four by Four to create a show to be performed in future festivals.
